The Star City Soccer Foundation (SCSF) was established with the goal of supporting refugees and immigrants in Roanoke with opportunities in education, leadership, and assimilation. SCSF has seen a multitude of individual and operational successes in its seven years.
One of the ways that SCSF is working to accomplish this goal is through the Ndarugiriye Mariam Education Fund. It will also be able to benefit all refugee students in Roanoke in helping them reach their long-term goals.
In two years of operation, the Fund has paid for thousands of dollars in education expenses, including:
-
Tuition for one semester at Virginia Western Community College
-
Enrollment fees at Radford University
-
Books for a semester at Radford University
-
Partial tuition at Roanoke College for multiple semesters
-
Books for a semester at Roanoke College
-
Monthly tuition for three children at the West End Center
-
Cooking and nutrition classes for one participant at the Roanoke Natural Foods Coop
-
Summer school resources for classes through Roanoke City Public Schools
The Hope Soccer Festival is the main fundraiser for the Ndarugiriye Mariam Education Fund. In four years, approximately 1000 individuals have participated in male and female divisions ranging in age from U8 through 35+. The 2017 tournament will be expanded to include two venues.
The tournament is actively seeking volunteers, sponsors and donors.
